The U-Turn project aimed to explore the Greek-speaking areas of southern Italy and to promote linguistic minorities by fostering processes of cultural exchange and narration through art and memory. Brainchild of Cypriot artist twenty three and Francesca Lacroce - working in the field of public and contemporary art - the project was developed thanks to the collaboration with local institutions and associations, such as Parco Turistico Palmieri (Martignano), GAL Area Grecanica, and Jalò tu Vua Association (Bova), Centro Studi "ChoraMa" (Sternatia). U-Turn consisted of a journey through the villages of Salentinian Greece (Apulia) and Bovesia (Calabria) in order to narrate a culture that is gradually disappearing in its daily function. It reached the main places and inhabitants that strive to preserve the traditional language of Salentinian Greece and Greek Calabria: key figures that served as biographical source that inform the art project. By initiating a dialogue with the protagonists, thanks to a shared linguistic matrix, the artist twenty three became the spokesperson for the identity of these communities. All the gathered stories, cultural values and traditions were elaborated through the creation of two murals, one in the village of Martignano (Puglia) and one in Bova (Calabria). These villages and the facilities made available by Parco Palmieri and GAL Area Grecanica hosted the team during their exploration in the two regions. Francesca Lacroce guided the artist's journey by facilitating encounters with local realities, places and citizens. While disseminating in situ the essence of this specific trait of the Italian culture, the urban interventions and the project have conveyed this cultural experience beyond the regional and national borders. U-Turn was produced thanks to the crowd-funding initiated by the ZaLab association (Rome) within the FuoriRotta Call for Proposals.
